About Human Design

How do I read this?

Human Design

Read the summary first, then explore one shape or connection at a time.

Annotated demo chart: 1. Start with the summary beside the drawing; 2. Look at the nine shapes; 3. Follow one coloured line; 4. Read the two columns of activations
Fictional example made from a synthetic test chart. It does not belong to a person. Numbered markers help you locate the parts described below. Tap the image to view it at full size.
  1. 1. Start with the summary beside the drawing

At marker 1, the demo summary reads Manifesting Generator, Respond and Sacral. These sit under Type, Strategy and Authority, this system’s shorthand for patterns of energy, engagement and decision-making. Profile describes proposed learning and relating roles; Definition describes how the filled shapes connect. Read the words first. You do not have to decode the whole drawing to begin reflecting on the reading.

  2. 2. Look at the nine shapes

At marker 2, find the diamond in the middle; it is labelled G (identity) in the Centres tab. The nine shapes are called centres. Filled shapes are defined; outlined shapes are shown as open in this chart. These labels describe the system’s proposed consistency or responsiveness, not how capable or complete a person is.

  3. 3. Follow one coloured line

Near marker 3, follow the complete connection from 5 to 15. Open Definition to find the same pair and the two centres it connects. A complete connection between two centres is called a channel. The numbers at its ends are gates. Tap an active number to find its entries in the Activations table. The Definition tab lists complete channels in words and numbers.

  4. 4. Read the two columns of activations

Open Activations at marker 4 and find Sun. In this demo it reads 10.4 under Personality and 46.6 under Design. Personality uses the birth moment and is shown in black. Design uses an earlier calculated moment and is shown in red. A value such as 10.4 means gate 10, line 4. These are reference labels; the reading explains the proposed patterns in everyday language.

You can return to your chart with your browser’s Back button. The reading is there to put the symbols into everyday words.
