Human Design Explained: Type, Strategy and Authority
Updated
A modern synthesis with its own vocabulary
Human Design uses birth date, time and location to calculate a BodyGraph. Planetary positions are mapped to sixty-four gates associated with the I Ching. The chart also includes a second set of positions from before birth, distinct from the birth-moment set.
Its nine centers are connected by channels; the chart's connections contribute to its classifications. These are concepts within the system. A colored center does not measure the condition of an organ, and an uncolored center does not identify something broken or missing in you.
Four types, often presented as five
The original framework has Manifestors, Generators, Projectors and Reflectors. Manifesting Generators are a Generator subtype, often listed separately in popular introductions. That is why one source may say four types and another five.
The system associates Manifestors with informing, Generators with responding, Projectors with recognition and invitations, and Reflectors with allowing a lunar cycle for major decisions. Treat those strategies as prompts to examine a habit. A type is calculated from the chart, not chosen from a personality description.
Authority is different from type
Type is a broad classification. Authority is the system's term for a decision-making process, based on a further set of chart rules. Two Generators can have different authorities, so a type alone does not supply the whole instruction.
‘Emotional authority,’ for example, invites time before a decision; ‘sacral authority’ emphasizes an immediate response. You can notice how either idea fits your experience while still considering evidence, commitments, consent and practical consequences. A chart label never obliges you to ignore those things.
Worked example: a preference is not a type
This is an illustration, not a person's chart. Imagine someone has Moon in Taurus and a Human Design chart labeled Generator with emotional authority. The Moon in Taurus placement page offers questions about steadiness and emotional comfort.
The Human Design reflection asks something else: after responding to a possible plan, does the preference remain after time to think? They could compare an immediate wish to keep a familiar routine with a considered choice about trying something new. The Moon sign does not determine the type or authority. You need the separately calculated BodyGraph for those labels.
Use an experiment small enough to review
Choose a low-stakes decision, write down your first response, allow whatever pause is useful, then compare the eventual choice with what happened. You are observing your experience rather than proving the chart correct.
Read Astranema's Human Design system overview before exploring individual gates or profiles. The system's biological language does not make the chart a genetic or medical assessment. Its classifications should not set limits on your work, relationships or ability to change. Keep the questions that help and leave claims that do not fit.
